4 Common Reasons Your Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping

If a breaker shuts off once, it might be a temporary overload. But if your breaker trips repeatedly, there’s an underlying issue that needs attention.


1. Overloaded Circuit (The Most Common Cause)

An overloaded circuit happens when you demand more electrical power than the circuit is designed to handle.


  • The Scenario: Plugging a space heater, a hair dryer, and a toaster into outlets on the same circuit at the same time.

  • The Fix: Unplug high-draw devices and plug them into outlets on a different circuit. If your home regularly runs out of usable circuits, you may need a circuit expansion or a panel upgrade.


2. Short Circuit

A short circuit is a more serious condition. It occurs when a "hot" wire carrying electric current comes into direct contact with a "neutral" wire (or another hot wire). This creates a sudden surge of high current with low resistance, tripping the breaker immediately.


  • Signs of a Short Circuit: A burning smell, visible discoloration around outlets or switches, or a breaker that trips instantly the second you reset it.

  • The Fix: Turn off the power and call a certified electrician. Short circuits pose a severe risk of electrical shock and fire.


3. Ground Fault

Similar to a short circuit, a ground fault occurs when a hot wire touches a grounded portion of the junction box, bare copper ground wire, or moisture.

How to Safely Reset a Tripped Circuit Breaker

Before calling an electrician, you can attempt to reset the breaker once using these steps:

  1. Turn Off Connected Devices: Unplug or switch off appliances on the dead circuit to reduce initial power demand.

  2. Locate Your Breaker Panel: Open the panel door and look for a switch that isn't aligned with the rest. A tripped breaker usually sits in a middle position between ON and OFF (or shows a red/orange window).

  3. Switch Fully OFF, Then ON: Firmly push the switch all the way to the OFF position until it clicks. Then, flip it back to ON.

Safety Warning: If the breaker trips again immediately after resetting it, do not force it back on. Forcing a breaker to stay on bypasses its built-in safety mechanisms and significantly increases the risk of an electrical fire.
